SUMMARY
Whey protein has unique properties that
distinguish it from other proteins with high biological values.
Specially processed whey (e.g., Promune) contains undenatured
proteins especially rich in cysteine and glutamate. Both amino
acids serve as precursors for glutathione formation, thus helping
to quench oxidative free radicals, which build up as a result
of stress. The product contains active immunoglobulins that
are similar to human ones. These can bolster a poorly functioning
immune system. Promune costs about half as much as other whey
proteins with similar characteristics. Whey protein is concentrated
in that it provides protein without many additional kilocalories;
most patients with acute conditions such as major surgery or
trauma or chronic conditions such as cancer or AIDS have supernormal
protein needs, but energy needs similar to those of uninfected
persons. Thus, whey protein, rich in undenatured proteins and
immunoglobulins, is the ideal supplement for patients with an
acute insult or with chronic conditions.
